Wondering if I could get an opinion about vid cards. My current set up has the following..

ASUS M4A79XTD EVO AM3 AMD 790X ATX AMD Motherboard
CORSAIR DOMINATOR-GT 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600 mem
AMD Phenom II X4 965 Black Edition Deneb 3.4GHz processor
EVGA 512-P3-N871-AR GeForce 9800 GTX 512MB 256-bit DDR3 Vid card
COOLER MASTER Silent Pro 700 RS-700-AMBA-D3 700W ATX12V power supply
Western Digital Caviar Black 750GB 7200 RPM 32MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb hdd

Thinking about getting a new vid cardwith the coming money and was wondering what you guys think the best bang for the buck would be.

Maybe two of these-

Or one of these-

Or neither one of them and something else entirely. Let me know..Thanks ..Bob

Hell, you actually get money back from the Gov! I havn't seen a cent in years and have to pay them most of the time!

I don't know what to tell you..Maybe a better accountant..lol Used to do my own taxes years ago, but never got the returns I get with a good accountant. The person I use is a former IRS agent and she does a great job...Plus she hates the IRS now...Hmmm maybe I better look over that return a little closer..lol

I'd say the 5870 also, or you could get 2 5770s and run them in crossfire. Still, I think the 5870 is pretty good bang for the buck, even if the prices now are higher than when they hit the market early on.

I'd go with the 5870 and then down the line if you need additional firepower (and the price drops) throw another one in since your Mb supports CrossFireX. I've seen some benchmarks and that card is a beast.

I have my own taxes in check. I just don't let the Gov keep my money for the year when it’s mine. After all, you don't earn interest while they sit on your cash. Some people use it as a savings account and count on the money when they could have had it sitting in the bank.<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />

It's been a little rough the first few years post military trying to get it back to near zero. I owed Uncle Sam $4500 last year. Getting a retirement check along with 5 salary increases causes taxes to go a little haywire. Good news is the balance of what I owe the Feds this year is nearly covered by the oversight on state.

A buddy of mine in Florida does the same thing. I would just rather pay it as I go. Having a large tax bill at the end of the year does not sound like fun. And if your not able to pay it all the fines can be steep.

Mine was a pretty large return this year (I claim married withold at higher single rate). This was good, since my property tax increased by about 42% this year and they made us do both payments within 2 months of each other. Most of it went to that. They haven't had tax bills on time in Indiana since they passed reassessment a couple years ago. Then they scramble to figure out who they are going to screw to make up for their shortfalls. My assessed valuation actually went down, but the state eliminated some credits, thereby making the tax cap of 1% of valuation a moot point.

I'd get a 5850 right now (cheapest you can find) and wait for nvidia's fermi which is coming out very soon.

The 5850 is faster than the GTX275 even... but I think still a bit slower than the GTX280, or something like on par (depending on the scene/game).

IMO the 5870 is not worth it, especially on the eve of the Fermi release (well, it will still be ~2 months probably)...

Yeah, and it's been since Nov 2009 since the original "release" date. I wouldn't hold my breath. It's like anything else though, if you're unhappy with what you have now, then that's the time to upgrade.

Last year I had to pay into our state for the first time in 17years; thats what you get for a shitty dem gov. Red, how did you get your money through the year? because I claim 0. There is no way during the year I would have came up with 3400 bones, besides a bonus; in one check. Plus, the intrest rate for my bank is around 1%; I guess I gave the government 200 bones in intrest.

Now you guys got me thinking of waiting for the Fermi. I can run the games I play now no problem so I might as well wait. Hopefully the Fermi wont have a lot of first run issues that seem to plague new comp parts.

i have 2 of the 5870s in crossfire they are awesome. plus its dx11 unlike all the nvidia cards out right now. you go nvidia you have to wait for the fermi for dx 11

The other issue becomes that if you go Nvidia you can't run SLI with your current motherboard unless it's a single PCB dual GPU card. If you go with 5870 you could always run an additional one later for more firepower.

don't forget nvidea's need for 2 6 pin power plugs per card, so it limits your psu options
(actually eliminates your PSU so factor that into cost for an nvidea card, if you plan to run sli later)

Ok one 5870 coming soon, maybe another later. Might get memory instead later though. Only using 4 gigs now.

They never set a release date for Nov. as far as I remember. Anything heard was speculation. However, seeing that the card exists and has even been demonstrated already gives me confidence that they will most likely be ready by mid Q2 to release - or a bit later, but definitely not past mid summer.

Then again, 2 months can easily turn into 4-5, so if you need something powerful NOW, you should get the top dog which is the 5870 (which apparently you already did).

It should deliver beastly performance... at a beastly price.

Personally, I'm waiting for the second-highest end card based on the Fermi core (the nvidia equivalent of the 5850), and depending on price will get it on release or shortly after. If it's like the ATI cards at release where the retail price was $400 but the street price $500 - fuck that.
