New Rig Ideas: Video Cards

Wait, where's the popcorn?

I'd go with the 670's Jason. I don't think you need two to do eyefinity or whatever its called. If I remember correctly they daisy chained the connections for that. I know a few people running triple monitors and they love it. I did at one time, however my current desk wont support triple 27" monitors. I would do it again if I had the space.

The rig is ordered, sans the video card(s) for now. I'm going to build the new one with my existing GTX 580, and then do the video overhaul during round 2.

  • SB-E 3820
  • ASUS P9X79 MoBo
  • 2x128G SATA3 SSDs
  • Cooler Master Sniper case and their 1000W PS
  • CPU heat sink, fan, brackets, etc

The RAM I have in my current rig will work fine in the new MoBo, so no need to replace it.

Increase your in game FOV.

Problem solved. Three monitors still isn't really going to show you that much more, at least on foot.

I'll take "Missing the Point" for $500, Alex...

4GB EVGA GTX 680 "Classified" ordered as well.

LCD panels will come later.

I'll be out of gaming action (but still online) while I assemble this rig.

Boy this thing is pretty quick. Loads up those BF3 maps in almost no time at all. But I guess having a striped C drive made from 2 SSDs would help that, huh? :-)

Two Pics...

...but not of the hardware. I removed the 2 Dell 24" LCDs from my Mac Pro video editing rig and attached them to the PC, along with the existing Samsung 24". The desk isn't pretty and clean yet (I'll get a 3-LCD stand to clean it up), but you'll get the idea.

The first shot is flying a jet and looking straight ahead. The second a heli while looking to the right a bit. Note the way the crane spans the displays. Pretty neat.

That is sweet, but I have to comment on the power strip. Might need a kick ass battery backup upgrade -- no need to have all that money laying around without the guarantee of clean power.

Nope. Power spikes aren't a real concern (much to the chagrin of UPS marketeers everywhere. :-)). That's not to say they don't happen; it's just that they aren't that common (read that carefully). Power outages, on the other hand, certainly can and do happen. But I don't care if the power goes out on my gaming rig.

My servers and networking gear, on the other hand, are protected.

Fuck that -- I don't want my gaming rig crapping out on me. The only time the UPS has really helped with funky power has been post hurricane (when in Florida) or post storms in Atlanta or here with brown outs. Besides, what is that, about ten things plugged into that power strip?

Chargers for mice (low draw)
Chargers for video cameras (low draw)
3 LCDs
2 Computers (PC and Mac)
...

spread over 2 strips.

Thanks for the concern, but I'm not in need of electrical suggestions. :-)
