NVIDIA promises 'fastest DX11 GPU on the planet' very, very soon (video)

Nobody will be too shocked to hear NVIDIA expects its next flagship GPU to be the fastest that's ever been, but few will have guessed it'd also be one of the company's coolest and quietest. In the first public teasing of its next-gen graphics card (which is almost certain to bear the GeForce GTX 580 name tag), NVIDIA has revealed a new vapor chamber cooling system, which reminds us of Shuttle's ICE CPU cooler -- basically, water sealed within the chamber gets boiled by the hot elements (a copper plate in NVIDIA's case), which forces it to transfer heat away to the bits that are being cooled by the fan, where it chills out and recycles itself back to the boiling plate. The end result, according to NVIDIA, is about seven decibels less vroom relative to the GTX 480, along with lower operational temperatures. Besides that, the company's Tom Petersen also showed off an impressive tessellation demo and the first public display of Call of Duty: Black Ops gameplay, which was powered by this as yet unannounced GPU. Skip past the break to see it all on video.

It should also be about 14 decibels more expensive. Not to mention 35% faster marketing, and 29% better gimping of ATI cards in future AAA titles, and 75% less energy blaming TSMC for their design flaws.

Eat my ass, Nvidia.

Ah, I see you're familiar with Nvidia products.

Ah, I see you're familiar with Nvidia products.

And ATI products. If you ask me, both companies are sucking ass and charging too much. That 4870 you sold me a year ago is actually worth MORE now than it was last year...only because it is a strong card and prices for new cards refuse to go down. The 5850 is still the same price as launch day! GRRRRRRR!!!!! I thought they would be $100 by now.

In other news, the 4870 is still chuggin along just fine and playing all my games with acceptable framerates. Thanks again for hookin me up. :P

my 5770 has been very good to me. I think 5850 is overkill and pricey.

I've read some of the preliminary benchmarks and it's fast, stupid fast. Of course I'm sure it'll be expensive, stupid expensive.

...prices for new cards refuse to go down.

Not true. I saw today on Newegg a Sapphire 5870 for $299 with a $30.00 mail in rebate. The prices are dropping, but slower than they have before that's for sure.

It must be nice to have money like that you baller. Are you slinging crack on the side?

Pimpin Soulzz's family & Fast;
Anytime I travel I get $85 a day just to travel, that's on top of salary. BTW, I have a GTX 295 for sale now

I'd have bought one already too if I was still in the US with a job :-( .

"Gaming" on a laptop with a mighty 8600M-GT 256MB for now - lulz. Far better than integrated POS's at least...

The NVIDIA GeForce GTX 580 video card has better performance, makes less noise, runs cooler and draws less power than the GTX 480. We honestly love this card and it really sucks for NVIDIA that the original GeForce GTX 470 wasn't designed this way. The performance of the GeForce GTX 580 was great and we constantly saw double digit performance gains in many of the games and applications that we benchmarked. Overclocking performance was also good as we were able to get another ~10% or so from a card that was already at the top of the performance charts for single GPU performance.

Looks like the 480 done right this time.

Mehh, only marginally better than GTX 480 and doesn't overclock that much better. Better temps/lower noise for those who care, but with water, I doubt there will be much difference, except the extra 32 shaders.

Bring on the next gen. I want Crysis maxed out at 60fps minimum at 4xAA and 1920x1080. That will be the card ;-)

I just got my gtx 470 today, I can finally play fall out new Vegas. I guess 260's in SLI was not enough.

No kidding Six.

Balls--you have that Rampage III up and running yet? Curious about what you think :)

I love it; running W7 with SSD smooth sailing. I can OC via ASUS RC Bluetooth; my droid phone has the app on it...how sweet is that; I can sit on the shitter & OC my puter.
