PSU is TOAST!

Now if we could just get Zappy's brain fixed we'd be all set....sigh, but I know only the good lord can work those kind of miracles. So, I ask god to please hit zappy in the head with a lightning bolt or a dump truck, whichever is more convenient, to try to uncross some of the wires in his head that became tangled and short circuited as a wee lad. Thank you. Amen

Hit in the head by a dump truck being struck by lightning!

Sucks about your PSU. My fave PSU was a PC Power and Cooling, but I haven't used their stuff since they were bought by OCZ. I know Evga will treat you right!

I've had an Antec Earthwatts 650W since my very first build over two years ago. Never done me wrong.

Yeah, I had a BFG 650w for years, no problem, same with PC Power & Cooling 750w, and the Enermax 1050W. But, I also had a Sesonic 600W I overtaxed and it went poof! and now this one.

I got my new PSU today and am putting it in tonight. I didn't feel like pulling the old one out, and putting in the backup just to take it out again today to insert the replacement.

Anyway, I should see you online tonight when I'm done with that.

Actually, I got another PSU and installed that. I ended up getting the CoolerMaster V1000. It's a re-branded Seasonic and got a very good review at jonnyguru.com

I just don't think I'll be trusting my system to the EVGA PSU after that blow out. It's an illogical response, because I'm sure the EVGA PSUs are fine. They've gotten good reviews but (a) I didn't feel like waiting for the cross shipment and (b) it bothered me that a brand new product broke.

Anyway, I'll soon have a brand new EVGA Supernova 1000G2 for sale shortly since I'm too lazy to take the PSU I just put in my system out and put another one in. It's a down side of water cooling, I suppose. No change is ever quick and easy, even with the PSU cables.

PSU is toast-update

So, the original EVGA 1000G2 PSU died spectacularly when it failed under load and smelled of burnt electronics. I RMA'd the thing but got a Cooler Master V1000 to replace it while I waited. I had lost my faith in the EVGA PSU from the way it died and the Cooler Master one is a Seasonic that got great reviews. I've been using it ever since and it's dead silent and reliable as hell.

So, I got an email from EVGA today stating there was a manufacturing problem with the intial 1000W PSUs they made that could lead to sudden failure....no shit. End story, they're cross shipping me a brand new one that's supposed to be a corrected version and they're paying for shipping both ways.

Now, I wasn't happy with EVGA's PSU but I've got to admire how they said yeah, we fucked up and did all they could to make it right. Now I'm waiting on the new PSU and here's the email I received:

EVGA has discovered that a small batch of our 1300W & 1000W Power Supplies (P/N: 120-G2-1300-XR, 220-P2-1000-XR, 120-G2-1000-XR) did not meet the quality levels that EVGA stands behind. There is insufficient insulation on the thermal pad by a heatsink which may cause the Power Supply to shut down or be unable to power on.

Our records indicate that you have registered an EVGA product that is affected. Where possible, RMA's for your product(s) will be setup with free expedited shipping and a return label. Upon receipt of the new Power Supply, please use the included return label to send back your old power supply, cables and accessories to EVGA.
We're sorry for this inconvenience and to help ease the hassle we are including an EVGA T-shirt with your new power supply shipment.

Very nice Six. Im always a hater with the companies that don't design their own shit (I mean hell most companies don't "make" anything) and while Corsair is pretty good with rebrands, EVGA's move on this is awesome. It would be one thing if they did this in response to you filing a complaint. But to contact owners themselves is another thing. It kinda speaks to the nature of the problem. They likely expect all units affected to fail the users and generate more cost in the long run then a recall.

Yeah, the PSU's probably would fail too, but this was a great move on EVGA's part. How often do you get a company that comes out and says they fucked up and are offering replacements and free shipping and throwing in a goody like the t-shirt? Nobody does that any more. So, while I'm very happy they resolved the problem, it generates a lot of goodwill that they do something like this unsolicited.

Back to something mentioned before above about PC Power and Cooling? I did not know they were bought out by OCZ. Also not sure what will happen to them since OCZ is going bankrupt currently.

I have 2 cheapo 850W PSUs from OCZ on mah miners, and they're going pretty strong.

For a desktop where I care about performance and quietness, I probably wouldn't buy anything else except Corsair...

Not sure there; PC P&C became part of OCZ technologies in 2007 to exploit it's marketing and sales. I don't know if OCZ owns the rights completely to them or if it was a marketing agreement.
