Was looking at photos of these (actual) ones with a friend and they seem to have a shitload of styrofoam on them when new lol. Over the the system makes sense but the front and back... not as much and I dunno if its only the spent ones but most of the ones I see dont have it on the front.

The styrofoam acts as protection and i think it serves as insulation so the infrared sites are able to remain calibrated. It doesnt ever come off.
