So much for a Titan Killer

I bet the 290x destroys at BF4 with mantle enabled. At the end of the day buy a card you can afford and call it a day...
Really curious as to how this AMD API thing is going to play out. It has to catch on. Just for the simple fact that consoles are using AMD APUs.

XBox isn't going to have Mantle support apparently. Ruins that I guess. BF4 doesn't get Mantle until over a month after a release.

I wouldn't trust the chinese crap 100%, HOWEVER, it's within line of expectations. I wouldn't have expected the card to be WAY above the Titan. That's insane. I just expected it to be about equal if not a bit slower, at a much lower price point, which it seems like it might be.

Now, the 400W of power suckage, that's kind of unpleasant...

I can only hope I will finally see a 780 on some kind of promo. I have NEVER seen a promo from newegg on a 780 yet, and it's been 6 months since release.

There?s not much more I can say at this point, except that I have several cards tested at 3840x2160, and R9 290X doesn?t just do well against the GeForce GTX 780?

radeon r9 290x benchmarks

But at what Price?

I love running all my computer components around 94C; this is one reason I went away from AMD. Curious about what dB the fan is giving off.

Thats funny...My AMD processor runs around 35 C in full burn on prime95 and my 6970 runs at about 60 C at full pull with the gay reference design. GPU fan is loud though..I'll give you that.

Erik and Papi you guys both do know these are AMD benchmarks FROM AMD. No site with these "first" benchmarks have actually tested the card yet. The results are from internal AMD benchmarks on drivers no one has yet on games that are AMD sponsered. The review sites had the results ahead of time but were not allowed to reveal them.

"We’re only able to show you R9 290X compared to GeForce GTX 780, and only at 3840x2160. But despite those limitations, these numbers were run in our lab, on our own equipment."

Ah looks like AMD did indeed allow them to conduct their own tests under the AMD testing protocal. Its well known at this point that GCN cards do better at higher resolutions. AMD is still afraid of what they have already tested. That while this will be the card for multi monitor and 4K gamers it will not perform so miraculously for everything else.

Also note that the Titan killer is not allowed to be tested against the Titan, for a very good reason. AMD's official release came from the quiet mode and not full power and while impressive obviously letting the review sites put out their full benchmarks on their own makes it all the more impressive. Not sure what the deal was there though why they held back the numbers from the internal benchmark. Either an issue at the time or a well played maneuver?

These are all 4K and apparently outside of the embargo AMD has put on testing and releases:

AMD wouldn't want any non amazing results to be the first info out the door and you can see a couple in there. At 1080P it will be much less amazing. AMD's marketing team likes to seize the future before its here. No one is going to want to play 4K at 40 fps but if you had to have one card rather than 2 this is the one for you.

Sleeping dogs and nvidias drivers seem to have a SERIOUS issue at 4K!

A WELL played maneuver ...At 1080p/1440/1600 will be more amazing due to the higher framerates.. Those numbers are good at 4k and im definitely sure the 290x will beat A Titan with a moderate overclock. And when the non references cards come out..man.

But one thing is certain on my mind..I think AMD will put them at $650 for sure to "justify their performance" over the Gtx 780 and titan.

At 1080p the 290X will be less amazing. Their architecture is not inherently powerful but it scales very well which in a battle of resolutions is a winning solution.

AMD is run by its marketing department. They try to win over customers by controlling the situation for as long as possible prior to release. The difference between them and anyone else is they are run by business people who seem to have more of a background in marketing rather than electrical engineering.

All those running 4K monitors at this point are the most likely customers for this card. The problem is that a gamer with money might have a 1080p 120hz monitor and is in search of high frame rates and has more money than the average 1080p gamer.

At this point a buyer says well in all the benchmarks I have seen this beats the 780. That's exactly what they want. They are marketing to 4k or multi monitor gamers and fans as well as idiots who don't know they are being fooled.

The reason they are not allowing any 1080p benchmarks is the numbers won't help sell the card. Once the card releases they can't stop that info. But until than any reputable site is kept in line by the threat they will never get a review sample again if they don't so what they are told.

Looks like 780 and 290X head to head in this particular bioshock bench:

Until you turn down the settings to make the game playable at 4K and then the 290X pulls away.

Keep in mind the other bench from Toms was on an opening scene. But they had much higher frame rates as well as the other leaked bench. These results may represent closer to real world game play not 100% sure on that. They didn't seem to specify the test like Toms did.
